I got a virus :(

I always preach it but forgot to practice! Change your passwords!
Whether through that mistake, or just a malicious virus, my site was hacked. I had to back up and reinstall WordPress, but I am concerned my theme files may have been the ones that were infected. To be sure I don’t re-infect my site, I am going to take this opportunity to re-design sorcadesign.com! Please bear with me as I get Sorca back on her feet!
Thanks

WordCamp Miami 2011

WordCamp Miami was this past Saturday at the beautiful and breezy UM Campus in Coral Gables. The sessions were varied in their scope and difficulty, but I always come out with some amazing little snippets of info that will make my life better, and my clients sites better!

Myself and Denise Jacobs spoke on a panel, presented by David Bisset, about our favorite plugins. It was a beginner crowd, so I went over my tried-and-true contact form generator, Contact Form 7. Here’s a photo of me tweeting a photo of David.

Denise introduced us to CMS Tree Page View which I will certainly be using on my next WordPress install!

Some chance, some charity and a fast car

I met Miles last year when I designed the original FloridaLuxuryAuctions.com. He was trying to raffle off his house, give some proceeds to charity and offload the house in an unconventional way. But despite help from Dennis Rodman and Jon Secada, not enough tickets were sold. The raffle did, however, donate over $100,000 to the Mission of St.Francis in Fort Lauderdale. The rehab facility then donated some of that to Women in Distress and the Coalition to End Homelessness.

Happily, Miles came to me to design the new raffle site, to showcase the fabulous red Ferrari that they are now raffling off. They had realized that the old, dowdy Mission website probably threw off some potential ticket-buyers, so we just re-designed that too.

Here are the results. Please buy a ticket!!

Welcome your website to 2011

Happy New Year to you and your families..and your clients!

I wanted to send out a quick reminder that this is the perfect time to update the copyright on the footer of your website. While it’s not putting your content at risk, having a current date on your site shows that your site is up to date, and that information on it can be trusted.

If you don’t have the ability to make this change in-house, drop me a line and I can update it for you.

Important WordPress Update

WordPress has had some security issues recently and Automattic (makers of WordPress) issued a release encouraging users to upgrade to version 3.0.4 immediately.

If your site is running WordPress, you will see an upgrade prompt on the top once you log in. I encourage you to do that as soon as you can!

Here’s hoping that 2011 drags us out of the doldrums of the recession and into a really prosperous year!

Conversion Optimization Presentation

I just remembered to post this Presentation I did at Refresh Miami about Conversion Optimization (June 16, 2010). I went to an amazing Conference in California in May, and brought the info back to work, and Miami.

Check it out

Medial Practice Re-design

I had the pleasure of working with an old colleague to refresh the design of his client’s site. The Spine and Back Pain centers of San Antinio needed to add pages, a blog, and a look that wasn’t so templated.

We broke the services and procedures into separate menus. We added longer doctors bios and more information about every procedure. The aim was to increase the content of the site, both for SEO purposes, and for their potential patients.

Safe Homes, Sharp Site

Impact Windows and doors sell well in Florida in the Summer. It’s hurricane season, and we all get anxious when that cloud cluster appears in the east Atlantic. We’ve all lived through too many near-misses, days without water and general discomfort, to scoff at the beasts.
There are many vendors selling windows to protect precious homes, making it a tough market to crack. Home Pros of Florida had that challenge, and needed a sharp, engaging site that would draw homeowners trust.
Home-Pro of Florida

Hello, I am here today.

Designed to appeal to the primary decision-maker, the woman of the house, the site has soft colors and deep wood tones. The company also does an ingenious cabinet refacing service, a great money saver in these “tough economic times“.

A very important asset was incorporated right into the homepage, the Lead Gen form.  Kept as short as possible, it allows prospective clients to enter a few details, and a representative will call them later. Keeping it simple is always the best policy!

Let’s just home that those windows don’t get tested this year!

USA Rugby South : Big wordpress for a Big organization

USA Rugby South
This new launch is the culmination of months of work between Sorca and USA Rugby South. USARS has thousands of members, all across the Southwest United States. They govern every Rugby club from Tennssee, to North Carolina to Florida to Alabama.

So needless to say they needed a site that communicated with all those clubs, players, coaches and referees very effectively. We decided on WordPress as a platform and using a plethora of plugins, made it a hub that everyone can make use of.

There are 80 pages, 13 plugins and 10 administrators! Continue reading

New Launch: RugbyDept

It’s been a busy summer at Sorca Design! In between entertaining family members and enjoying Florida’s great outdoors, I sheltered from the heat with plenty of web design projects. This one, for an up-and-coming Rugby Jersey supplier in Kansas, was a fun and exciting little job!

I was introduced to Theo through a former team-mate who had found Theo’s unique tribal-styled tees on the internet on a previous incarnation of his site. The part that proves it’s a small world is that I had already heard of him! I used to work with a Theo who had the same last name, and Theo#1 complained that his Google ranking was being usurped by this Rugby Theo!!
